Starting from 2018 The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) provides a new service to help people with low or fixed income file their taxes. The new service called File My Return is a simplified solution which requires to provide some personal information through an automated phone service. The eligible individuals will have to go through a short questionnaire instead of filling out any paper forms or doing any calculations.

File My Return service is absolutely free of charge and simple in use.

Eligibility for the New Service

File My Return service can be used by people with low or fixed income and whose financial situation remains the same during the past years. Eligible individuals will receive an official invitation letter in the main in the middle of February.

Without an official invitation, a person is considered to be ineligible. File my Return service will first verify and check person's eligibility over the phone. In case the person does not have enough qualification to proceed, an automated service will notify about it and will finish the process.

How to Use File my Return

After receiving an official invitation letter providing all the details, the eligible individuals will have to use the automated phone service to proceed. Once they call the File my Return automated service, they will be given the further directions to complete the process.

You can end the call by hanging up at any time. Yet, in this case, the information will not be saved and, as a result, your income tax and benefit return will not be submitted.

File my Return service is connected to the CRA's database and uses information, which the agency has on file at the time of a call. Therefore, all the answers provided by the users are registered and used for filing the user's income tax and benefit returns. All the deductions, credits and benefits are taken into account.

File my Return service is available starting from 02/26/2018 from 6 am to 3 am daily until 04/30/2018. The questions regarding File my Return service can be addressed by phone 1-800-959-8281.

Quebec residents can apply only for the Federal income tax and benefit return, whereas the regional Québec provincial tax return has to be filed separately at Revenu Quebec.
